  1. What's new in this release?

  4. This is a major overhaul of Perforin. Numerous features are added,
  5. scanning and disinfection code optimized and improved, documentation 
  6. beefed up, and so on. Signature database from previous releases is not
  7. compatible with the 2.0 release. Perforin checks the version number and 
  8. warns the user if it is necessary to get a newer signature database.

  17. -Rewrote major sections of scanning and cleaning code. Speed is improved
  18.  by 60% in some cases. The new implementation also makes it possible to 
  19.  load a very large number of virus entries in the database without slowing 
  20.  down Perforin's operation noticably.

  22. -Added reliable polymorphic macro virus scan.
  23.  
  24. -In some rare cases, the macro table was not parsed correctly. Fixed.

  26. -Added detection and removal for about 400 new variants. That brings the
  27.  variant count to over 1000 in mid-June 1997.

  29. *-Added capability to scan inside password protected documents. If a document
  30.  is infected, or disinfected, the password will be displayed next to the
  31.  virus name both on the screen and in the log file. Perforin does not
  32.  decrypt user documents. It uses StripSearch(tm) technology to scan and
  33.  disinfect in a transparent manner.  (registered copy only)

  35. -Added user-adjustable heuristics. Higher level settings are prone to
  36.  false alarms. We are working to improve Perforin in this area.

  38. -Improved variant identification and eliminated false hits due to snatched
  39.  macros found in some antivirus macro-based solutions.

  41. -Changed the default file search algorithm to skip files known usually
  42.  not to be documents, such as EXE and DLL files. Perforin goes thru drives
  43.  much faster now. Note that this differs than common implementations that
  44.  will miss viruses in files that do not have a .DOT or .DOC extension.

  46. -Added an option to force Perforin to scan all files. This may be desirable
  47.  when you actually discover a virus infection during the regular scan mode.

  49. -Enhanced removal algorithm to automatically switch to "remove all" mode
  50.  if the found virus requires such a method. You don't need to change
  51.  the cleaning mode to "remove all macros" for viruses like Cap. Perforin
  52.  knows how to handle each viruses properly.

  54. -Simplified and enhanced ExamineDoc to report viruses that contain a certain
  55.  macro. Our research indicates that only 25% of the macros found in known
  56.  viruses are different. The rest are borrowed from each other or innocent
  57.  macro packages. You can see a list of similar viruses easily.

  59. *-ExamineDoc can now display the source code of the macro, even if the
  60.  document is password protected using the StripSearch(tm) technology.
  61.  Note: StripSearch is disabled in the trial copy. Source code will be
  62.  displayed if and only if the macros are not encrypted. We do not release
  63.  the fully enabled ExamineDoc at this time due to potential misuse.

  65. -Improved the multiple virus report capability. Even polymorphic + other 
  66.  virus combinations are reported properly.

  68. -Added family variant detection to discover minor variants of known viruses.
  69.  This new scanning method does not use signatures, and it was very reliable
  70.  in our tests.

  72. -Added an option to show all documents that have macros in them even if 
  73.  no known virus is found.

  75. -Added reload signatures command to update the virus signatures without
  76. exiting Perforin. This dynamic update feature will be extended in the
  77. future to check a location on a server periodically and apply the necessary
  78. updates transparently.

  80. -Added a command to launch the default browser so that users can visit
  81.  our website easily.
